Rhododendrons & Azaleas

Fertilize azaleas and rhododendrons with an acidic fertilizer when new growth begins in the spring, again at bloom time or right after; then feed monthly until August. 

Always prune Rhodies after bloom and never more than 1/3 of total plant.  Shearing Azaleas after flowering will keep them lower and denser and always produces more bloom year to year.

Are your rhody leaves notched?

That would be the work of the root weevil! Their larvae feed on the rhododendron roots. Usually the shrub will out compete the insects however if the damage is extensive you made need to dispatch with them; come on in and our nursery or garden center personnel can show you some product options for getting rid of them.

If you want to get a look at these long-snouted, evil weevils, they are most active at night. We have a natural organic root weevil spray that works!
